Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of treadmill exercise and electro-acupuncture by time (1st, 3rd, 7th and 14th day) on apoptosis and to determine subsequent variation to neurological motor function recovery. TUNEL staining was used to make observation on histologic change for apoptosis while a narrow beam test and an inclined plane test were performed to analyze neurological motor function recovery. Rats were divided into four groups. Group I; nontreatment after spinal cord injury (n=20), Group II; a treadmill exercise was applied after spinal cord injury (n=20), Group III; a electro-acupuncture was applied after spinal cord injury (n=20), Group IV; treadmill exercise and electro-acupuncture were applied after spinal cord injury (n=20). In immunohistochemistric response of TUNEL in spinal cord by time, group II, III and IV showed considerable reduction of positive expression in comparison to group I on 7th and 14th day. Especially, group IV resulted in the most significant reduction of positive expression compared to other groups on the 14th day. In neurologic motor function (narrow beam test and inclined plane test) change by time, group II, III and IV showed an increase of motor function recovery in comparison to group I on 7th and 14th day. Especially, group IV resulted in the most significant increase compared to other groups on the 14th day. These results suggest that treadmill exercise and electro-acupuncture were effective apoptosis change in recovery of motor function following spinal cord injury.
